The Andrews Labor Government has secured the National Housing Conference in 2022, bringing more than 1,000 delegates to Victoria for one of the nation’s most significant gatherings of social housing industry leaders.
Minister for Housing Richard Wynne today announced the biennial conference would be held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre over three days in March.
Run by the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI), the conference has an international reputation and is a vital opportunity to showcase ideas in housing research, policy and practice.
The 2022 conference will examine the lessons learned for the housing sector during the global coronavirus pandemic.
It will also look at how Australia’s housing system is responding to issues created by climate change – including resilience to bushfires, floods and other extreme weather events, sustainable design, and energy-efficient housing.
The conference will tackle a range of priority areas including affordability and availability in the private rental market; improving links between housing and support systems, such as healthcare, education and training as well as national housing policy coordination.
More than 1,100 delegates attended the most recent conference – 2019 in Darwin – and an even larger audience is expected in Melbourne, delivering a significant economic boost for local businesses and jobs.
The National Housing Conference will take place from 2-4 March 2022 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre as well as being accessible online.
Melbourne stands ready to repeat the success of the last time the conference was staged here in 2009, with more than 1,400 delegates attending – the largest conference in the event’s 20-year history.
