The Andrews Labor Government has secured the future of the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) in Victoria thanks to more than $1 million in funding.
Escalating costs had meant ANAM was considering its future – but Minister for Training and Skills Steve Herbert today announced ANAM will remain in Melbourne, with the Labor Government contributing $175,000 per year for six years.
In return, ANAM – which trains some of Australia’s most talented musicians – will increase its links to Victorian communities, including those outside of Melbourne and to schools.
Primarily funded by the Commonwealth, the Victorian Government has previously supported ANAM through contributions towards fit-out costs, teaching positions and professional performance programs.
It is important for Melbourne, Australia’s cultural capital, to retain its world class music performance training capabilities to produce the musical performers of the future.
Melbourne is also home to the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, which is part of Melbourne University, as well as high quality music programs at a number of other universities, TAFEs and private training providers.
As part of the Victorian Budget 2016/17, the Labor Government announced $10 million for the redevelopment of Monash University’s Alexander Theatre in Clayton, as well as $115 million for Creative State to create jobs, develop local talent and grow our creative industries.
