Patrons attending races in the state’s south west will never miss a minute of the action again thanks to the installation of a $234,000 super screen at Warrnambool Racecourse.
The Andrews Labor Government is providing $117,000 towards the new super screen through the Victorian Racing Industry Fund. The Warrnambool Racing Club is matching the contribution dollar for dollar.
The super screen, which will be installed in time for the club’s 2017 May Racing Carnival, will be more than six metres high and 11 metres wide. The screen will be used to broadcast races, wagering information, social media feeds, sponsorship information and on-course activities.
Previously, the club has hired a big screen for its five feature race meetings, including the Port Fairy Community Raceday, at an annual cost of $21,000.
The club hosts 19 race meetings annually and has the largest membership base in country Victoria.
The Port Fairy Cup was re-established in 2011 after a 35-year hiatus and its popularity continues to grow.
Many organisations, businesses, families and social groups host their end-of-year celebrations at the event, taking advantage of the free shuttle bus service to and from Port Fairy.
The racing industry in the Western District generates more than $100 million for the Victorian economy and helps sustain more than 980 full-time equivalent jobs in the region.
