Steve Herbert has today advised the Legislative Council of his intention to retire from his position as the Member for Northern Victoria.

Steve has shown a lifelong commitment to improving educational opportunities for Victorians. As a teacher, adviser to state and federal governments, and then a member of parliament, he has always worked to improve education access, quality and opportunity for all Victorians.

As a Minister, Steve led the Government’s efforts to strengthen our training system and rebuild our TAFEs.

He delivered on our election commitments to save TAFE with the $350 million TAFE Rescue Package and through his hard work and dedication helped re-open Lilydale TAFE. He also overhauled the private training sector to return quality and oversight to the system and protect students against exploitation.

His work has ensured thousands of young Victorians will get the life opportunities they deserve with access to the training they need for the jobs they want.

Steve was elected as the Member for Eltham in 2002 and worked tirelessly for that community until his move to the Upper House after the 2014 election.

He can be very proud of his strong advocacy for his electorate which has delivered significant upgrades and improvements for many local schools and sporting facilities.

I thank Steve for his many years of service to the Labor Party, the Government and the people of Victoria and wish him and his family well for the future.
