The Allan Labor Government is backing small businesses and encouraging Victorians to visit their local shopping precincts and support local traders for last minute gifts and Boxing Day sales.

Minister for Small Business and Employment Natalie Suleyman today met with the Oakleigh Traders and Business Association to announce $200,000 to support the much-loved Oakleigh Activity Centre – an iconic suburban shopping precinct that has small traders bursting with gift ideas.

Oakleigh is a renowned destination for some of Victoria’s best Greek cuisine, cakes and coffee, as well as gifts and fresh produce.

The funding boost will support the Oakleigh Traders and Business Association’s to work with local businesses to activate their social media presence and run activities to leverage the cultural strength of the area – encouraging more people to visit.

The project is funded under the Labor Government’s $17 million investment to support multicultural traders and precincts. As part of that investment, $2 million was invested to support multicultural traders’ associations, so they can work directly with the local businesses and communities.

Multicultural businesses play a crucial role in our economy – they create employment opportunities, strengthen the vibrancy of our business precincts across Victoria, and build connections to diverse local communities. During the festive season, they provide a place for people and communities to come together.

Victoria is proudly home to more than 701,000 small businesses – and over a third are owned by migrants. Christmas is the perfect time to shop small and support local businesses, with that support flowing into state’s economy.

Victorians can also support small businesses through the 2024 Business Victoria Christmas Gift Guide at business.vic.gov.au.
