The Andrews Labor Government is helping to safeguard and restore the historic Camperdown Turf Club grandstand thanks to a $330,000 grant.

Minister for Racing Martin Pakula today visited the club to announce the funding, which will be used for key conservation works identified by Heritage Victoria, including repairing the stairways and roof bracing.

The Camperdown Turf Club Grandstand was built in 1903 and designed by notable local architect Michael McCabe.

It is a substantial example of a Federation-era grandstand with a spectator mound skilfully integrated into the design, and one of the largest racecourse grandstands in Victoria – seating up to 1000 spectators.

More than $500,000 has been provided by the Victorian Government over the past 15 years to stabilise the grandstand, and this additional funding will mean the restoration works can be completed.

The Living Heritage grant will help to secure the future of the club’s historic grandstand and attract more visitors to local events.

The Government recognises that heritage places improve the cultural experience of Victoria and provide a wide range of economic, social and community benefits.

As part of the Victorian Budget 2016/17, $30 million was allocated to safeguard and restore the state’s key heritage places.
