Students in the southern Geelong region will soon have access to state-of-the-art learning facilities following the completion of a new campus for Oberon High School, thanks to the Andrews Labor Government.
Minister for Education James Merlino today visited the site of the new campus in Armstrong Creek with Member for South Barwon Darren Cheeseman and Member for Geelong Christine Couzens, ahead of its opening for students in term 1, 2021.
Students who are currently enrolled at Oberon High School in 2020 will be able to continue to access the free School Bus Program, or access free public transport to the new campus in 2021 as part of the Conveyance Allowance.
Families that require travel assistance through either program in 2021 can apply directly through the Oberon High School. The campus at 155-175 Batten Road, Armstrong Creek, is part of the new Armstrong Creek Education Precinct and designed to cater for growing demand for education in the southern Geelong region.
The new Oberon High School will help alleviate enrolment pressures for surrounding schools and ensure that there are sufficient high-quality secondary school places to cater for local population growth.
It will be located next to the Armstrong Creek School, a combined primary and specialist school, ensuring quality education for Prep through to Year 12 all in the one precinct.
Students and staff will relocate from the school’s Belmont campus at the start of term 1, 2021, bringing with it the school’s proud name, history and culture to continue at the new site. The new campus has places for up to 1100 students, allowing the school to grow into the future.
Students and staff will be able to share in new learning communities, a science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) building, an administration building and library, food technology building, a gymnasium with two competition-grade courts, performing arts space, sports field and four outdoor play courts as part of the works.
In the past five years, the Labor Government has invested more than $9 billion in more than 1,600 school upgrades – creating more than 10,000 construction jobs – and is now ahead of schedule its commitment to open 100 new schools by 2026, with 48 new schools opening between 2019 and 2022.
