Every Victorian deserves a safe place to live and the Andrews Labor Government is investing more than ever in building new homes for those who need it most.
Minister for Housing Richard Wynne today watched construction get underway of a $3.3 million social housing development in Ararat, which is part of the Labor Government’s landmark $5.3 billion Big Housing Build.
The project will deliver 16 one-bedroom social housing homes, providing much needed additional housing options for people at risk of or experiencing homelessness, aged and disability pensioners, and women and children escaping family violence.
Construction is anticipated to be completed mid-next year and is also generating a positive economic benefit for the area, creating 28 local jobs.
The project adds to the significant social housing construction activity currently underway in the area. There are a further 15 homes under construction in Ararat and 16 townhouses about to commence construction in Stawell.
Through the continuing investment in housing, the Labor Government is both creating a pipeline of modern, fit-for-purpose social housing for people who need a roof over their heads, and the jobs that go with building them.
The Big Housing Build is the largest single investment in social and affordable housing in Australia’s history and will deliver more than 12,000 new homes across Victoria.
This historic investment will boost Victoria’s social housing supply by 10 per cent, while creating 10,000 jobs a year over the next four years.
The investment includes $1.25 billion in regional areas, ensuring the economic and social benefits are felt in communities across the state.
