Minister for Training and Skills, Steve Herbert, has outlined the Andrews Labor Government’s vision for Victoria’s TAFE and Training system at the annual Mick Young Oration at Kangan Institute’s Automotive Centre of Excellence in Docklands this evening.
Following in the footsteps of past orators such as Kim Beazley, Julia Gillard and Wayne Swan, Mr Herbert paid tribute to Mick Young, who was a champion of education.
Mr Herbert said that the Labor Government is rescuing and rebuilding our TAFE and training system so all Victorians can get the skills they need to get the jobs they want.
The recent 2015-16 Victorian Budget provided $350 million to invest in new TAFE facilities and support public TAFE institutes to provide more training that lead to jobs and increased productivity.
It also provided $8 million to establish a new Skills Commissioner to improve alignment between training delivery and industry needs.
The independent VET Funding Review, headed by Bruce Mackenzie, will ensure all training providers are supported through a more sustainable funding model so they can meet the needs of growing industries.
The Government’s VET Quality Assurance Review will develop a more robust quality framework to restore student and employer confidence across the training system.
Mr Herbert said the Labor Government was doing more to support students, providing $32 million to Local Learning and Employment Networks to help young people to stay engaged with education and $8.8 million to provide discounted vehicle registration to apprentices.
