Communities in Melton have had a first look at the concept designs for the new Melton Station – as the Allan Labor Government prepares to remove four more dangerous and congested level crossings.
Minister for Transport Infrastructure Danny Pearson announced new rail bridges will take trains over Coburns and Exford roads and new road bridges will be built over Ferris Road, and Hopkins Road in Truganina, making Melton boom gate free in 2026 – two years ahead of schedule.
The new Melton Station will be built with four platforms to cater for one of the fastest-growing communities in Australia – paving the way for future improvements and increased capacity on the line.
The elevated station will become accessible from both sides of the rail line – with pedestrian walkways, cycling paths, pick-up and drop-off zones, and lifts and stairs to each platform.
A new air-conditioned waiting room and staffed ticket office will be built, along with lighting and security cameras throughout the surrounding area.
The new station will provide better connections for cyclists, trains, buses and car parking with a new multi-bay bus interchange also included in the designs.
The Melton level crossing removal works will help introduce larger nine-car VLocity trains as part of the $650 million Melton Line Upgrade, increasing capacity for passengers by 50 per cent and creating 1,000 jobs during construction – while making roads safer and less congested for pedestrians.
To support the introduction of nine car trains, a new train stabling facility is being investigated at Cobblebank where trains could be stored when they are not operating, further supporting local jobs in construction and ongoing maintenance.
Community feedback, alongside technical requirements, have shaped the early concept designs for the new Melton Station precinct and the level crossing removals. To have your say on the concept designs, visit engage.vic.gov.au.
Designs for the level crossing removals at Ferris Road in Melton and Hopkins Road in Truganina will be released in the coming months, with consultation to follow.
