Families in Melbourne’s rapidly expanding inner bayside suburbs are a step closer to a new primary school, with the Allan Labor Government acquiring land in the City of Port Phillip for a school at Fishermans Bend.

Minister for Education Ben Carroll today announced the Labor Government has acquired land on Williamstown Road, Port Melbourne to build the Fishermans Bend Primary School (interim name).

The land acquisition is exciting news for current and future local families, helping meet the needs of the growing population across the area with a brand-new, modern school.

The new school, which will open from the beginning of 2026, will provide places for up to 650 students from Prep to Grade 6 at the centre of Fishermans Bend in the Wirraway Precinct.

Fishermans Bend is Australia’s largest urban renewal project, covering 480 hectares that will be home to 80,000 people.

The recent Victorian Budget 2024/25 completes the Labor Government’s promise to deliver 100 new schools by 2026, with $1 billion for 16 new schools across Melbourne and regional Victoria and additional stages at two recently opened schools, creating future classrooms for more than 15,000 kids.

The Government has invested $16.9 billion over the past decade to build new schools and deliver more than 2,000 school upgrades − supporting more than 26,000 jobs in construction and associated industries.
