The Andrews Labor Government is improving one of Melbourne’s busiest boat ramps for locals and visitors to enjoy.

Minister for Fishing and Boating Sonya Kilkenny today visited the Werribee South boat ramp – which will soon be upgraded to make launching boats quicker and easier.

The six-lane boat ramp services a significant number of boaters on the western side of Melbourne, as well as provides access to Port Phillip, Corio Bay and the Werribee River.

Upgrading the boat ramp will improve the facility's functionality, as well as reduce congestion that can impact boaters, especially during peak holiday periods and snapper season.

Consultation on the boat ramp upgrade took place last year to inform a final concept plan, which is now being converted into construction-ready designs by maritime engineers.

The plans include adding an extra boat ramp lane to help improve the efficiency of launching boats of all sizes, as well as an additional pontoon and realignment of existing structures.

Plans also include provisions for future all-abilities access, extended boat preparation and tie-down areas, an additional entry lane to reduce queuing onto Beach Road and existing overflow parking to the west of the ramp will also be retained.

Werribee South is one of several boating facilities in the area to be upgraded by Better Boating Victoria (BBV), with plans also progressing on improvements to the nearby Altona, Kirk Point and Avalon Beach boat ramps.

“The Werribee South boat ramp is one of Melbourne’s busiest – which is why this upgrade is needed to ensure it can continue to provide access and be used by boaters well into the future.”

“With a new ramp lane and pontoon complemented by boat preparation space and an additional entry lane, there’ll be less queueing and more capacity at the ramp for boaters hitting the water.”

Quote attributable to Member for Werribee Tim Pallas

“We know how much locals enjoy using the Werribee South boat ramp and getting out on the water – so this upgrade will go a long way in ensuring it remains a community asset for years to come.”
