Hearing From Victorians On The Energy Transition

The Allan Labor Government is building for our future – securing additional gas storage capability and reducing demand for gas to slash Victorian energy bills and preserve supply for those who need it.

Minister for Energy and Resources Lily D’Ambrosio today released the 2024 Gas Substitution Roadmap Update and opened consultation on the Building Electrification Regulatory Impact Statement (RIS).

The 2024 Roadmap Update shows the steps the Labor Government is taking to secure gas supply and to help Victorians drive down their energy bills by switching to efficient electric appliances.

This year, the Labor Government approved the first and only application for new gas production in a decade and has passed new legislation that paves the way for the development of new offshore gas storage projects.

Consultation on the draft regulations for the Building Electrification Regulatory Impact Statement is now open – to hear from Victorians on how different electrification options could benefit them.

It is a genuine consultation and opportunity for Government to hear from to Victorians about the options.

The Government will not make any changes to gas cooktops in homes, gas appliances in existing commercial buildings and industrial, agricultural and factory facilities, as well as the use of LPG.

The Government has not made any other decisions on changes to be investigated through the Regulatory Impact Statement consultation process.

All new homes that need a planning permit are already required to be built all electric. The consultation will consider expanding this requirement to all new homes and many commercial buildings.

Converting an existing home with solar panels from gas to electricity can save around $2,000 a year on energy bills. This can rise to over $2,700 when paired with a typical rooftop solar system. To have your say on the Building Electrification RIS visit, engage.vic.gov.au/building-electrification.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Energy and Resources Lily D’Ambrosio

“Gas is part of our energy transition – but supply is dwindling and prices are going up. That’s why we are securing new supply and helping households and businesses switch to electric appliances, slashing their energy bills and reducing demand.”

“We want to hear from Victorians on how to help households to switch to electric appliances, so they can save money on their energy bills. This process is a genuine conversation and way to hear the views of Victorians.”
