Half A Million Trees For The West

The Allan Labor Government is creating cooler, greener suburbs across Melbourne’s west ensuring our streets and cool and shady for local families to enjoy.

Acting Minister for Environment Ros Spence today announced the successful applicants for the final round of the More Trees for a Cooler, Greener West program, will see 500,000 trees planted – with 410,000 already in the ground.

This latest round of funding will deliver an additional 90,000 trees by mid-next year.

The Labor Government is investing close to $2 million in grant funding to support this final phase of tree plantings, which will include both mature trees and younger, smaller tubestock trees.

Tree plantings are strategically located in parks, reserves, alongside paths and roads, as well as in residential and industrial areas with the lowest tree canopy cover across western Melbourne – such as Werribee, Point Cook, Tarneit, Wyndham Vale and Melton.

Twelve successful applicants have been awarded a share of the $1.7 million through round 5 of the grant program, including Victoria University, Zoos Victoria, Wyndham City Council and many more.

Victoria University’s Werribee Campus will benefit from 5,000 new trees, along with a staggering 12,500 more trees for Werribee Open Range Zoo, a share of 12,500 tree plantings for Werribee River, and 7500 trees for Werribee River Park and Lollypop Creek.

The More Trees for a Cooler, Greener West program provides much needed shade to for communities across Melbourne’s bustling and growing western suburbs.
