Residents have started moving in to almost 50 new modern social housing homes built as part of the Allan Labor Government’s record investment in social and affordable housing.

Minister for Housing Harriet Shing today visited the newly completed $19 million housing development in Point Cook, delivered as part of the Labor Government’s landmark $5.3 billion Big Housing Build.

The new homes are comfortable and energy efficient and will be allocated to people on the Victorian Housing Register and managed by community housing provider Baptcare, the successful tenderer for the first round of the Community Housing Placement Program.

The development has created more than 170 jobs during its construction.

There will be 2,000 newly constructed or purchased homes delivered for the community housing sector. The new homes will be managed for 30 years, and ownership will remain with Homes Victoria.

In an agreement with Homes Victoria, Baptcare will manage 159 homes including 48 homes at Waterhaven Boulevard in Point Cook and will build an additional 33 social housing dwellings.

More than 7,600 new social and affordable homes have already been completed or are underway and the Labor Government is on track to deliver at least 12,000 homes and create more than 40,000 jobs.

On top of launching Australia’s biggest ever urban renewal project, Victoria’s Housing Statement also brings together a package of further initiatives to boost social housing across the state.

We‘ll build up to 769 new social housing homes over the next five years with funding from the Commonwealth Government’s Social Housing Accelerator – including low density developments on Homes Victoria owned land and medium and high density developments on Victorian Government owned land.

In July, we announced a new $1 billion Regional Housing Fund to deliver more than 1300 new social and affordable homes across regional Victoria.

We’ll also invest $1 billion in the Affordable Housing Investment Partnership (AHIP) program, providing low interest loans and government guarantees to finance social and affordable housing for Victorians that need it most.
