Construction to remove nine more dangerous and congested level crossings on the Frankston line will get underway in 2018, beginning in Carrum and Seaford.
A Lendlease, Acciona Coleman and WSP consortium will remove four level crossings at Mascot Avenue, Bonbeach, Station Street and Eel Race Road in Carrum, and Seaford Road, Seaford with revitalisation works beginning in the new year.
The $588 million project will not only remove four level crossings, it will also build a new Station Street road-bridge over the Patterson River and reconfigure local roads to connect McLeod Road to the Nepean Highway.
Train stabling will be moved away from Carrum with a new train storage facility near Kananook Station to allow up to 24 trains to be stored, up from the current six at Carrum.
In a massive win the for the community, the R.F Miles reserves and surrounds will be upgraded as part of the Seaford Road level crossing removal.
The first stage of the works will begin in early 2018 with the new road bridge across Patterson River connecting Bonbeach and Carrum via Station Street for the first time. The road bridge will be complete by the end of next year and provide a local alternative to the busy Nepean Highway, making it easier to stop at local shops.
Walking and cycling will be easier, with four safe crossings across the Nepean Highway and a new path stretching all the way to Frankston via Seaford Station and a new pedestrian underpass at Eel Race Road.
In addition, Carrum Village will also be revitalised around a new station and promenade that will extend McLeod Road to the beach, connecting both sides of Carrum with new parking and more open space.
Community feedback has been integral in shaping these projects and there will be further opportunities for the community to have their say on the revitalisation of Carrum and Seaford in early 2018.
The project will boost traffic flow, safety and create more than 400 jobs during construction. To view the updated designs and have your say visit levelcrossings.vic.gov.au
