Melbourne’s Free Tram Zone will be extended to stops near the MCG for this Saturday’s Big Bash League, Battle of Melbourne double-header.
On Saturday 6 January tram services from the CBD to stops 9,10 and 11 on Wellington Parade near the MCG will be free, all day, Saturday 6 January,
The Free Tram Zone will also be extended to stops 7a and 7b at Rod Laver Arena and stop 7c at MCG/Hisense Arena on the other side of the MCG to get fans from the city to the Stars versus Renegades matches, free of charge.
The extended Free Tram Zone is also in place for other major sporting events, including the Australian Tennis Open and AFL Grand Final.
The extension for this Saturday’s Big Bash League matches recognises many passengers are currently disrupted by major infrastructure works, there is no parking at the MCG and that a forecast top of 41 degrees makes it challenging for some people to walk to and from the venue.
The extended Free Tram Zone will also spread passenger load more evenly across all transport services and get people to the venue safer and more comfortably.
While there is no parking at the MCG, Big Bash League attendees who choose to drive can park in the CBD and catch a route 48 or 70 tram to the MCG free of charge, with no need for a myki.
An extra 26 train services will operate to and from Jolimont and Richmond Stations and 16 additional tram services will run on Routes 48, 70 and 75.
