The Andrews Labor Government is helping public housing tenants in Flemington find a job and start their own business.
Thanks to $650,000 in funding from the Labor Government, 150 residents will be placed in sustainable jobs and 50 students will undertake school-based traineeships with Victoria Police and the health sector.
The project will draw on job opportunities provided by the government’s major pipeline of infrastructure projects, including the Metro Tunnel and through partnerships with large and local businesses and iconic sporting clubs.
At least 20 new resident-owned and operated businesses will also be created, with a focus on cafes, catering and laundries. The Brotherhood of St Lawrence will work with tenants to make sure they’re job ready.
The project will target culturally and linguistically diverse residents, the long term unemployed and women with pre-school age children by providing access to long-term, secure employment, high quality training, including English language classes, TAFE and university courses, mentoring and study support.
Under the community revitalisation project, the project will be managed by a local board supported by the Moonee Valley Council and will include representatives from Victoria Police, local businesses and government agencies responsible for major projects.
The initiative follows the success of the Labor Government’s Jobs Victoria employment campaign which has placed almost 3000 people in jobs over the last 16 months at a rate of about 40 jobs a week.
