A secondary college improving student engagement through Pasifika cultural performances, a school that teaches science in the Japanese language, and a principal whose leadership prompted strong NAPLAN results are just some of the outstanding winners of the 2024 Victorian Education Excellence Awards.
Minister for Education Ben Carroll congratulated the 13 winners and finalists last night at the annual awards which celebrate the commitment of teachers, leaders and school staff across Victoria.
Cranbourne West Secondary College won the Outstanding Education Support Team Award for its Pese Mai (Samoan for ‘sing out’) initiative which boosted student wellbeing and engagement through the production of a Pasifika cultural performance that featured in the Victorian State Schools Spectacular.
Glen Eira College’s Japanese Immersion Team was acknowledged for empowering students to challenge the monolingual mindset by teaching a range of science topics through the lens of Japanese language and culture.
Churchill Primary School principal Jacquie Burrows was awarded the coveted Lindsay Thompson Award for Excellence in Education 2024 following national recognition for leading her school’s approach to learning and wellbeing, which has produced strong NAPLAN results.
The award is named after the late former Premier and Victoria’s longest serving Education Minister.
This year’s awards coincided with Australia’s celebration of World Teachers’ Day, which recognises teachers for the work they do to educate, inspire and empower students.
The awards support the continued professional development of staff, with professional learning grants of up to $25,000 for the winner in each category plus a further $20,000 for the Lindsay Thompson Award for Excellence in Education 2024 winner.
