More than 600 primary school students are a step closer to getting the first-rate facilities they deserve, thanks to the Andrews Labor Government.

Minister for Education James Merlino and Member for Mordialloc Tim Richardson today turned the first sod to start construction on the new $500,000 facilities at Parkdale Primary School.

It’s the first step towards modernising the Prep classrooms by extending the central corridor to create a more open learning area. It will also involve the removal of asbestos and improvements to the toilet block.

The plans have been drawn up by Spaces architects and N&I Contractors have been appointed as the builders, with the new-look school expected to be ready in June 2017.

Mr Merlino and Mr Richardson also visited nearby Mentone Park Primary to inspect construction works, which are scheduled to finish by the end of the year.

The $457,000 modernisation includes the upgrade of four general-purpose classrooms to incorporate flexible teaching spaces and small informal group study areas. Existing carpet and lighting are being replaced, toilets refurbished and a new teachers’ office installed.

Today marks two years since the Labor Government was elected to put people first, and we’ve spent every day of the last two years achieving that by building a stronger and fairer Education State.

There are now 42 new government schools and hundreds of school upgrades in the construction pipeline following our record $1.8 billion investment in school infrastructure.

This school building boom will create 4000 construction jobs and ensure all Victorian families have access to a great school no matter where they live.
