Locals will be able to get where they need to go more quickly and safely, with a re-elected Andrews Labor Government to widen Barwon Heads Road and remove the dangerous and congested level crossing near Marshall Station, south of Geelong.
We said we would deliver new carparking at Geelong and Marshall Stations and upgrade the Geelong and Warrnambool lines as part of the Andrews Labor Government’s $1.75 billion Regional Rail Revival, and we’re getting on with it.
There’s more to do and only Labor will make it quicker and easier for locals in Geelong, the Bellarine Peninsula and the Surf Coast to get around.
Labor will invest $318 million to duplicate four kilometres of Barwon Heads Road between Settlement Road and Reserve Road, doubling the existing two lanes to four, as well as planning for duplication to Lower Duneed Road.
Intersections will be upgraded at Settlement Road and Breakwater Road, and new intersections will be built at Crows, Barwarre, Tannery and Reserve Roads, helping traffic flow more smoothly and making the road safer.
Labor will also build a new bridge to raise Barwon Heads Road where it crosses the train line north of Marshall Station, removing this dangerous and congested level crossing and making it quicker and safer for local drivers to get where they need to go.
This busy road will also be safer for local pedestrians and cyclists, with the upgrade to include a new shared path with a safety barrier, as well as new street lighting, road signage and landscaping.
A re-elected Labor Government will start planning and pre-construction work in 2019, with major works starting in 2020 and the project to be finished by 2023.
This vital upgrade will deliver quicker travel times and safer conditions for local drivers and builds on Labor’s commitments to deliver a full duplication of the train line between South Geelong and Waurn Ponds, with station upgrades and more trains for commuters south of Geelong.
It stands in contrast to the Liberals, who failed to deliver a single kilometre of new rail track when last in Government.
Quotes attributable to Premier Daniel Andrews
“Anyone who uses Barwon Heads Road will know how badly this massive upgrade is needed. This will make a real difference to both local families and tourists visiting our stunning beaches during the busy summer holidays.”
“This investment goes to show, only Labor can be trusted to deliver the things that matter to our community, like better roads, schools and hospitals.”
Quotes attributable to Member for Bellarine Lisa Neville
“This road is a critical piece of infrastructure and we have been doing the planning to get it right. The Liberals’ promise to fix this road is undercooked and under costed, with not enough money to duplicate to Reserve Road let alone Mount Duneed Road.”
