Braybrook Development The Future Of Housing

The Andrews Labor Government is delivering a new generation of sustainable public housing in the heart of Melbourne’s booming west.

Minister for Housing Richard Wynne today announced the Future Homes design competition demonstration project in Braybrook – bringing to life the architectural vision of architects LIAN in association with Kerstin Thompson Architects.

The project will deliver at least 12 new public housing apartments, providing a home for some of our most vulnerable community members on the social housing wait list.

The homes will be a mix of one, two and three-bedroom apartments with some of the ground level apartments designed for full wheel-chair accessibility.

These new homes will be light filled, have access to green space and be environmentally sustainable, providing thermal comfort for residents.

The homes are part of the Future Homes competition where design firms submitted innovative housing plans of what an easily replaceable future home could look like. Four competition winners were announced last month.

The winning designers and architects will work with the Department of Environment Land Water and Planning and the Office of the Victorian Government Architect to refine their entries into design models to be incorporated into the Victorian planning scheme.

By incorporating the designs into the planning scheme developers will be able to get projects off the ground faster and at a lower cost while meeting high design standards and energy efficiency requirements.

Future Homes will inspire a new generation of high-quality apartments that meet both the needs of a growing population and a diverse range of households.

The new homes are part of the Labor Government’s record investment in housing, including the landmark Big Housing Build. The $5.3 billion Big Housing Build will deliver more than 12,000 new homes and is the largest single investment in social and affordable housing in Australia’s history.
