A new program that will foster Victoria’s next generation of visual effects (VFX) artists is now open, creating an opportunity to work with and learn from the best in the business.

The VFX Placements program is a collaboration between Creative Victoria and Film Victoria designed to ensure our visual effects sector has the skills to meet demand and keep talent local.

Over the next two years, the pilot program will see 12 early-career VFX practitioners undertake a six-month paid placement at either Method Studios or Luma Pictures – two internationally renowned VFX studios that call Melbourne home.

Luma Pictures and Method Studios are both global companies whose Melbourne teams have worked on some of the world’s most recognised productions, including Game of Thrones, Captain Marvel, Black Panther and Aquaman.

In its first year, the program will include work on projects including Peter Rabbit 2, the untitled Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle sequel and the sixth instalment of the Terminator franchise, Terminator: Dark Fate.

The demand for visual effects in the screen industry is growing, with more productions using some form of VFX to realise their vision and some big productions spending up to 35 percent of their overall budgets on VFX.

In 2016-17, VFX work made up 25 per cent of all expenditure in Victoria’s film and television sector. The value of the VFX industry globally is expected to grow from US$8.6 billion in 2017 to US$20 billion in 2024.

The first intake of the program will commence in August with applications closing 9am Monday, 10 June. To learn more, visit film.vic.gov.au.
