The Andrews Labor Government has helped South Melbourne FC ink a historic deal that secures the growing club’s future at Albert Park, and sets the scene for the next major upgrade of Lakeside Stadium.

Minister for Sport John Eren and Member for Albert Park Martin Foley today attended the signing ceremony that will see the famous club call Lakeside Stadium home for the next 40 years, ensuring it remains at its true heartland for many decades to come.

South Melbourne FC was founded in 1859 and is one of Australian soccer’s most powerful clubs. The FIFA Oceania Club of the 20th Century, South Melbourne is a national sporting powerhouse, and has a strong women’s and junior setup.

The club currently sits top of the National Premier League, while the Women’s outfit are back-to-back state champions.

A $67 million redevelopment of Lakeside Stadium was completed in 2011, giving the 500 junior players and senior South Melbourne stars the state-of-the-art home base they deserve. The venue has become one of Victoria’s flagship soccer and athletics venues.

The new deal includes a 40 year lease, a 21 year licence and allows the next major upgrade of club facilities, complete with new change rooms, training facilities and a social club. The Labor Government is contributing $950,000 towards the upgrade.
