The Andrews Labor Government has appointed an expert independent facilitator to consult with Costerfield residents over antimony health concerns, and prepare a report on the local environment.

Minister for Energy and Resources, Lily D’Ambrosio, and Member for Northern Victoria, Jaclyn Symes, today visited Costerfield to introduce Mr Nigel McGuckian to residents at a community meeting.

Mr McGuckian has worked with rural communities, agricultural industries, businesses and farming families for more than 25 years. He has experience in business consulting, training, project management, social research and community planning.

Mr McGuckian will be an independent point of contact to help government understand and respond to the significant community concerns about the levels of antimony in the soil, water and air. He will also identify the roles and responsibilities of industry and the Labor Government.

Gold and antimony have been mined in the Costerfield area since the mid-1860s. The former Government commissioned an independent report last year that found elevated levels of antimony around Costerfield, but said adverse health effects were unlikely.
