The Andrews Labor Government’s $25 million investment to transform Ballarat Station took a major leap forward today, with the planning approval to deliver the project.

Minister for Planning Richard Wynne approved an amendment to the Ballarat Planning Scheme in response to recommendations from the Ballarat Station Precinct Advisory Committee and relevant agencies.

The project will transform the historic heart of the city into a vibrant, accessible and connected commercial community hub which will restore the prominence of the precinct’s key heritage.

The Labor Government’s investment will also provide a jobs boost for the region with around 140 local jobs to be created.

The project’s Structured Negotiation Phase (SNP) commenced earlier this month, following a two-staged commercial procurement process involving an Expressions of Interest and a Request for Proposal phase.

The proposed hotel and convention centre will include more than 100 hotel rooms, large flexible spaces for conferences and functions and a range of quality retail and dining options.

It’s estimated the project will cost over $50 million and attract significant private sector investment to the precinct, creating jobs and boosting tourism to the Ballarat region.

The project will also improve amenity for all users of the precinct, including commuters, pedestrians, visitors and the community.

The project is being delivered by Regional Development Victoria in partnership with VicTrack, City of Ballarat and the Transport division of the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources.
